What This Means
The cross-GPU price movement observed during the week of August 17–23 reveals a pattern worth examining closely. AIMC's data shows that out of 8,138 observations across 35 marketplaces, upward price movement was concentrated at the two ends of the performance spectrum: the newest frontier hardware and older consumer-grade silicon moved in tandem, while mid-tier workhorses held flat. The B300 SXM led all movers at +2.0% ($7.50 to $7.65), the B200 SXM followed at +1.0% ($6.11 to $6.17), and simultaneously the RTX 3090 ticked up +0.7% ($0.44 to $0.45) and the RTX A4000 gained the same +0.7% ($0.27 to $0.28). Against this, the H100 SXM and H200 SXM both closed the week completely flat. That divergence — frontier and budget moving, mid-tier stationary — is a pattern the data surfaces but does not fully explain.
One interpretation consistent with what we observe is that demand pressure is bifurcating: buyers seeking maximum throughput are absorbing the incremental cost increases on Blackwell-generation hardware, while a separate, more price-sensitive segment is filling capacity with whatever is cheapest. Our weekly observations indicate the L40S, available across 14 marketplaces with a median price range of $0.63 to $2.48 per GPU-hour, gained only $0.01 on the week, suggesting that mid-tier inference and fine-tuning workloads are not experiencing the same demand pull. With a single week of data, however, we cannot distinguish a structural demand bifurcation from normal week-to-week price noise across 113 distinct SKUs.
What the data does suggest is that the pricing behavior of the H100 SXM — unchanged at $3.20 despite movement in both adjacent and newer hardware — warrants continued monitoring. It is neither confirming the upward signal from Blackwell hardware nor following the budget tier's modest gains. Whether that flatness reflects supply adequacy, softening demand, or simply a lagging adjustment is not determinable from this snapshot alone.
